Making your windows energy efficient

Weatherproofing your windows is more important than ever this winter, as keeping heat within your home is going to save money on your heating bills over the coming months. Sash windows can often need a little more care than other windows and it can be best to leave the job to a sash specialist.

However, there are things you can do yourself! We’ve got some great tips on ensuring your windows are working for you this winter, so if you’re looking for advice on weatherproofing your sash windows – look no further…

The DIY fix – Ecobrush

Ecobrush is a cost-effective way to weatherproof your windows and you can do it yourself! It’s perfect for weatherproofing and also preventing your sash windows from rattling. It can be used on doors and is helpful for curved areas as it will seamlessly adhere to the shape.

  • Ensure the area is clean and dry before you stick the brush down, it will prevent it peeling off prematurely. And staple the ends using stainless steel staples to prevent them lifting.

Prevent draughty sash windows – Staff and Parting Beads

Staff and Parting beads create a seal around your windows, which will improve the energy efficiency of your home by preventing heat from escaping through gaps in sash windows.

They are available in both plastic or primed timber so you’ll find the ideal match for your window. The plastic beading looks exactly like traditional Parting Bead and is made from UV-Stabilised PVC, so it will never rot and is unaffected by accidental contact with paint.

We also provide drawings of all section sizes, which are available to view or download on each product page.

  • Beading is relatively easy to install, but if in doubt, always contact a sash specialist.

Don’t forget ventilation – Trickle Vents

You may be worrying about keeping the heat in your home this winter, but it’s important to install adequate ventilation too. By properly ventilating your room, you’ll prevent the build up of mould and damp in the room and avoid condensation on your window.

By installing trickle vents above your windows, you can ensure your room is well ventilated.

  • Even when the window is locked, our trickle vents allow a small flow of air from the outside.

Seal the heat in – Mightyseal®

This type of seal is best used for retrofitting, when you can’t router out a groove easily. Mightyseal® is foam and is completely unaffected by high temperatures, as well as being UV resistant.

This seal is one of our most popular because of its excellent recovery from compressed state and the fact it’s unaffected by rot, mould and mildew. It’s easily applied as it uses a high bond self-adhesive, so all you need to do is peel and stick!

  • Painting seals can sometimes mean they won’t expand properly. It’s important to check the seals you’re buying – most of the seals we stock at Mighton are resistant to paints.
